CMW presents The 2010 Studs Terkel Community Awards

Community Media Workshop honors journalists who go the extra mile to report news “from the people who made Chicago, news that’s bottom up rather than up, down,” as Studs said at our 2007 awards event. “That’s what this is all about.”

Louis B. “Studs” Terkel, the “patron saint” of Community Media Workshop from its founding in 1989, gracefully and graciously led these tributes to a special kind of Chicago journalism — the kind that, in the words of Salim Muwakkil at the March 2009 event, “is more important now than ever before.”

Presented annually, the Studs Terkel Media Awards honor outstanding media professionals for excellence in covering and reflecting Chicago’s diverse communities. Terkel Awards highlight reporters who take risks in covering social issues by offering new or unusual perspectives on topics of general concern, from housing to neighborhood safety and beyond. The awards reward a body of work rather than a single article or series, and go to journalists at any stage of their career.

Chicago poet, novelist and playwright Angela Jackson will discuss her recent book, “Where I Must Go.”

The South Side writer has been profiled by The New York Times, Chicago Tribune and Chicago Public Radio. Jackson’s debut novel, “Where I Must Go” (TriQuarterly/Northwestern University), is the story of an African-American working-class girl from a big city attending an elite university in the late ’60s. Jackson won the 1994 Carl Sandburg Award for poetry, and Booklist praised her novel’s “lyrical writing and finely drawn characters.”

Podcast project

Fader Radio was inspired by independent radio and other music podcasters.  Serving up tracks that our host provides in an easily subscribe-able format.  Playing music from artists you’ve heard and some you might have not.  Styles of music will range from metal to indie; ambient to noise; experimental to post rock; progressive to pop; and anything else that’s found to be cool.

The purpose of Fader Radio is not to make profit or to plunder, but to present the works of artists and labels. Hopefully entertaining all the way. They need your support to make a living and to create their art. So buy their records and go to their shows.

Jewish leaders under age 40 have created new minyanim (prayer groups), social justice activities, cultural endeavors, text-learning, and Web 2.0 innovation. In doing so, they have shifted the focus of their Jewish identity from the organizations that traditionally brought Jews together. Instead they find focus in purpose, emphasizing spirituality, cultural engagement, autonomous growth, new connections, and the transcendence of traditional boundaries.

Steven M. Cohen is a leading a sociologist of American Jewry. He splits his time between Israel and New York, where he is Research Professor of Jewish Social Policy at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and Director of the Berman Jewish Policy Archive at New York University. He is author of The Jew Within (with Arnold Eisen) and Two Worlds of Judaism: The Israeli and American Experiences (with Charles Liebman). He will share his current research on patterns of Jewish engagement among American Jews under age 40.

The Moth believes that everyone has a story. The Moth created StorySLAM to give those stories a forum.

Following the wild success of our Mainstage series, The Moth sought to accommodate all the people who asked, “When can I tell my story?” and to encourage those people who doubted they had a story worth telling. The Moth StorySLAM provides a stage and a microphone, a theme to inspire and shape the evening, a lively and supportive audience, and a host to guide the festivities. SLAM stories are limited to five minutes, and ten stories are heard.

So, take a look around and kick the tires.  Then let us help you  capture the energy of your gig;  that live atmosphere can be next to impossible to get in the studio.

We are continuing in the studio producing an album currently known as Pepper Crown for a project called Flinch. Flinch is heavy mix of thick electric and electronic quirks with a healthy dose of avante-garde experimentation. Tasty stuff.

Currently, Flinch is working on tracks for Agent Orange and the Aristacats and a collaboration called Mechanical – Poiesis.
